Photoshop and Symmetry

Some more images I made on Photoshop, this time focussing on reflection and symmetry, I simply took some of the previous photos and played with the symmetry of them as one of the main themes is reflection.

Playing with Light

From the box I made, I took some more images, this time focusing more on different lighting. Because of the strong angular shapes of the box and the space I decided to photograph it in (my wardrobe)the light does give off some interesting shapes and tones.

D.N.A Exhibition

The Wolstenholme Exhibition unfortunately fell through, so the group decided to organise the exhibition in the Student Union, this is the poster for the event.

Box (Complete)

These are some photos I took of the finished box with the head inside. I decided to change the view holes in the piece to link back to Sydney Nolan's paintings, in which he hid his subjects faces behind crude black squares with large spaces where the eyes should be, however, I feel they turned out a bit too large, so I might make another box and try to limit what the viewer can initially see in the box.
I feel overall it has turned out quite well and definitely does have its 'presence' which I wanted to capture.

Friday Pop Up Exhibit

These are some photos of the head (now complete) which I used in my Friday pop up session. The photo's aren't very good, but the effect of the light reflected in the head were very interesting. This isn't how I plan to show the head, but it has opened me up to the use of light within the sculpture I'm making. I thought the shapes and colours which reflected from the head were captivating and it almost felt a shame to confine them to a box, but then again, it reminded me of what I mentioned about Kusama's piece, about how I enjoyed the way she seemed to contain infinity, chaos and beauty within a small space.

Starting to make the box

I've began to make the box which I will hopefully be exhibiting in the Wolstenholme Gallery, I've also decided to use a head instead of a mask, I would like the piece to have it's own identity so to speak. These are a few images of the piece so far. I have also thought of the meaning behind the sculpture. I want to cover the head in pieces of broken mirror, relating back to Kusama's piece, however, I am looking at the social 'masks' we wear from day to day, a barrier to the world to protect our inner weaknesses. I would like the viewer of the piece to be able to look into the box, which represents the barrier between our inner selves (the head) and the outside world (the viewer)and see themselves reflected both physically and emotionally in this representation of 'inner self'.

Damien Hirst and Marc Quinn

I have been writing an essay for one of my modules for the course and I've particularly been concentrating on works by Damien Hirst and Marc Quinn, particularly Hirst's 'For The Love Of God' (2007) and Quinn's 'Self' (1991-)and I from these two pieces, I have realised that using a full head is a lot more powerful and striking than using just a mask. These two pieces are perhaps more well known for the material they are made out of (blood and diamonds) but there is a sense of dominance from their presence which I want to show in my final sculpture.
